World Vision donates to Tango-Beo School

World Vision Ghana (WVG) has donated 97 dual desks, exercise books and pencils, valued at GH¢ 7, 600 to the Tongo-Beo Primary School in the Talensi District of the Upper East Region.

This follows a story carried by a TV station on August 17, which revealed the plight of 190 pupils, who sat on the bare floor during contact hours.

The Operations Director of WVG, Mr Daniel Salifu, who spoke on behalf of the National Director of WVG, expressed regret about the situation, noting that, sitting on the floor in school not only exposed pupils to severe health hazards but also made them lose concentration.

He stated: “Additionally, this situation could de-motivate pupils’ in their school attendance and retention. This prompted us to act swiftly after TV3 broke the story. TV 3 must be recommended for that.”

The effort of TV 3 is a practical illustration of the role the media can play in national development,” he said.

The National Director said his outfit, which had been working in Ghana since 1979, and operated in 30 programme areas nationwide, had made many significant interventions including, those on Water, Sanitation and Hygiene(WASH), Health and Nutrition.

In the Talensi District alone, he said the WVG had undertaken a number of interventions such as the construction of class rooms, provision of water facilities, institutional latrines, formation of reading clubs, provision of supplementary books, as well as the training of teachers in numeracy and institutional methodology.

He expressed optimism that the support would help complement the government’s efforts in education and better give the school children bright future.

World Vision, he said, was currently engaged in an advocacy programme known as Citizen Voice in Action, aimed at building the capacity of communities to be able to demand properly from service providers.

World Vision has among its core values and principles, the welfare of children and has over the years been supporting them particularly on their education, he said.

Mr Hammond Bukari, District Director, Human Resource Development of the Ghana Education Service, pledged to put the items into good use and to prolong their lifespan.

He stated that over the years, WVG had continued to provide support in the area of education to the District.

The District Chief Executive, Mr Edward Awunnore, said he was overwhelmed by the support of the NGO in the area, particularly, the provision of educational materials and infrastructure and commended the NGO for the support.

The Director of TV 3 news production, Mr Gabriel Bosompem, gave the assurance that his outfit would continue to play its social roles by bringing to the fore the needs of society, particularly, the vulnerable to be addressed.
