Wieme Preko in T'adi

The impatience of Ghanaians at the falling standards of living in the country is continuing to find expression in demonstrations unprecedented in the history of the country. After the "Kume Preko" and "Sieme Preko" demonstrations in Accra and Kumasi respectively, it seems every regional capital is set to have its own version of "something preko" before the year runs out.

Last week, residents of the twin city of Sekondi Takoradi took to the streets in their numbers to express their anger at the government for the difficult economic and social conditions they find themselves in. Carrying placards some of which read: "JJ surrender for firing squad as you promised", "JJ your educational reform is a tragedy", etc., the demonstrators marched through the principal streets of Takoradi. They were addressed by Nana Akufo-Addo, a spokesman for the Alliance for Change who called on the opposition to unite so as to unseat Rawlings in the 1996 elections.

It is estimated that at least 10,000 people took part in the "Wieme Preko" [you might as well finish me off immediately] demonstration (some reports say the demonstrators were about three thousand in number while others say they were about three hundred thousand!!!).
