West Akyem Assembly exceeds revenue target

Asamankese May 01, GNA- The West Akyem Municipal Assembly as at the end of December 2007 collected a total of 238,112 Ghana cedis 55 Ghana pesewa as internally generated revenue representing 132 percent, which was over and above the estimated revenue of 180,417 Ghana cedis. The Assembly then decided to set a more challenging target for 2008 and accordingly estimated a much higher amount of 222.004 Ghana cedis 70 Ghana pesewa for collection as internally generated revenue for 2008. Mr Kwabena Sintim-Aboagye, Municipal Chief Executive, announced this at the second ordinary meeting of the second section of the assembly at Asamankese. He said as at March 31 this year, the assembly had collected a total of 48,731Ghana cedis 33 Ghana pesewa representing 22 percent which was the same percentage it collected within the same period last year. Mr. Sintim-Aboagye said the assembly received a total of 728,172 Ghana cedis 47 Ghana Pesewa as its share of the 2007 Common Fund allocation while it utilized 728,336 Ghana cedis and 18 Ghana pesewa on development.

The MCE on behalf of the assembly expressed appreciation to President J.A. Kuffour and the government for elevating the assembly to a Municipal status. "It is important that whatever we did not do last year is done well this year and whatever we did right, we strive to do better so that the development and progress we are all aiming at for our municipality can become a reality". He gave the assurance that his administration would also continue to ensure that assembly members were regularly informed of the progress of development in the municipality as it had done in the years' past. Mr Sintim-Aboagye however, regretted that members did not do enough to inform their electorate about the many good programmes and projects being undertaken by the assembly and the government. "In many cases most communities were completely ignorant of programmes being pursued by the assembly". He therefore suggested to members to mount platforms at least twice a year to educate and sensitize their communities about the assembly and government's programmes. 01 May 08
