Watch as first batch of Liberian refugees quit Buduburam camp

A total of 770 Liberian refugees at Buduburam in the Gomoa East District of the Central Region have been repatriated to Liberia following the demolition of the area earlier this year.

Approximately 4,300 Liberians are expected to be repatriated to Liberia within two months.

The GNA noted that many refugees displayed anxiety and sadness at the grounds of the former Liberia Camp as they loaded their luggage onto buses destined for their homeland.

They acknowledged the inevitability of their evacuation but found the unannounced demolition of their buildings distressing.

Dennis Yoko Gwion, leader of the Association of Liberian Community in Ghana, told the GNA that the demolition had left them vulnerable to theft of their long-accumulated possessions.

Despite this, they were prepared to return home to begin anew and improve their lives, as they had no alternative but to leave.

Timothy Jerome, a Liberian born in Ghana who was travelling to Liberia for the first time in 30 years, described the relocation decision as precipitous.

"As you can observe, people are departing; it's not out of their own volition but a necessity imposed by their circumstances," he stated.
