W/R to sanction non performing contractors

The Western Regional Coordinating Council has warned that road contractors who do not perform satisfactorily would not be given jobs.

The Regional Minister, Mr Paul Evans Aidoo, who issued the warning, therefore directed heads of Department of Feeder Roads, Ghana Highway Authority and Urban Roads to adhere strictly to the directive while the Tender Committee and Review Board must ensure that only competent contractors are considered for jobs in the region.

He gave the warning in a speech read on his behalf at a general meeting of the Council which was attended by the 22 Metropolitan, and District Chief Executives as well as heads of departments in Sekondi.

“I am directing that non-performing road contractors should not make any attempt to bid for road contract in this region.”

He asked the contractors at post to speed up with their work while the Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) must create a budget line for road maintenance.

Mr Aidoo urged the Chief Executives to ensure the completion of the street naming and property and work effectively to leave good legacy behind for posterity.

The Chief Executives expressed concern about the persistent illegal mining going on in their areas especially polluting the river bodies, which are the main source of their drinking water and called for concrete measures to be taken to flush out the miscreants.

Mr Kwabena Tweneboah-Kodua, District Chief Executive for Bia West said some people were in the area to undertake irrigation project but they later brought in heavy machines to prospect for gold in the Bia River, however luck run out of them as they were quickly stopped by the security who seized their machines.

The meeting came to a consensus that institutions and non-governmental organisations who wish to work in the communities must collaborate with the MMDAs for them to be aware of their presence and also to know the appropriate place of siting a project in order to prevent demolition or any unfortunate situation.
