W/R MPs urged to support Information Bill

The Western Regional Coalition of the Right to Know, on Friday called on Members of Parliament (MP) in the region to show interest in the passage of the Right to Information Bill into law.

At a focus group discussion of the coalition at Takoradi, Mr. Emmanuel Papa Assan, the Convener, also urged MPs in the region to help to improve the bill qualitatively to stand the test of time.

He said a good Right to Information law that meets international standards would promote democracy in the country.

Mr. Assan said there was the need for the people to embrace the culture of sharing information in order to create an open, transparent and accountable society.

He said Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) should publicize their development plans, revenues and their activities for the public to know the efforts they were making to improve the conditions in their areas.

Mr. Assan said "Chiefs should inform the people what they have done with their royalties, particularly about the development projects they have undertaken".

Mr. Assan said chiefs should also involve competent people in the management of their stools.
