A nursing officer of the Out Patient Department of the Bolgatanga Regional Hospital, Mrs. Bolsang Janet Bapperi, who is a victim of an assault case involving the Regional Organizer of the opposition NPP, Yaw Mort, has vowed to pursue the case to its logical conclusion to let the public know that her accusation was nothing else, but the truth.
Her stands follows a denial by Yaw Mort in some Accra-based radio stations that he did not assault the nursing officer.
The victim indicated that the NPP Regional Organizer did not only give him a hefty slap, but also used unprintable and insulting words on him.
The stout looking Yaw Mort, who is said to have given a hefty slap on the face of the nursing officer, was last Thursday arrested and detained by the Bolgatanga District Police Command after the Medical Director of the Bolgatanga Regional Hospital, Dr. Peter Baffour, lodged a formal complaint.
He has since being given police enquiry bail pending investigation into the matter. An official of the Bolgatanga Regional Hospital who spoke to the Enquirer on condition of anonymity, said the nursing officer, Miss Bolsang Janet Bapperi, was severely given a hefty slap by the NPP Regional Organizer for refusing to allow him to use a female urinal facility of the hospital.
“Since he has denied that he did not slap me, he is implying I am lying. At the appropriate time we will see who is a lie,” Mrs. Bapperi.
According to her, Yaw Mort denying the fact indicates he is indirectly saying all her colleague nurses who were witnesses to the incident are lying.
“His party people have been lobbying so that we will settle the matter amicably but his denial proves his still arrogant and pompous. Since the incident even happened he has never called me to say I am sorry to prove he really want the matter to amicably settle,” she added.
The NPP Regional Executives led by their Regional Secretary, Hon. Joseph Kpemka, and their Regional Youth Organizer, Michael Abugro, and other party bigwigs are purported to be maneuvering with the Regional and District Police Command for the case to be amicably settled.
Indeed, a source at the hospital alleged that NPP Regional Organizer’s conduct has attracted the attention of their National Executives, especially Jake Obetsebi Lamptey, the National Chairman.
In that extent, the source said Jake Obetsebi Lamptey called the Medical Director of the hospital for the case not to be pursued at the law courts.
But some of the nurses who spoke to this reporter on condition of anonymity are bracing up to go on a sit down strike if the management of the hospital do not pursue the matter up to its logical conclusion.
“Most members of the nurses association in the Region are urging us to go on strike. We will only watch to see how committed the management are in pursuing the case as they have assured as. Even our counterparts in other Regions are asking us questions as to what we are doing about the case,” an executive member of the Nurses and Midwives Association intimated.
Indeed, the Upper East Regional Police Commander, DCOP Bright Oduro, on Monday confirmed to a Bolgatanga-based radio station that investigations conducted by the police revealed that Yaw Mort slapped the nursing officer.
“I can state that a Regional Executive of one of the major political parties slapped a nurse at the Bolga Regional Hospital. Obviously, he would be charged for assault,” he noted.
“Any politician who has been involved in such misconduct would certainly deny but the law would take its course,” he added.
He, however, called on members of the public to desist from accusing the police that they would shield the culprit because he is a political leader.
He assured that his office is living no stone unturned to ensure that justice and fairness is delivered on the matter to maintain the confidence the public have in the police service.
