The Veterinary Services Directorate has issued a stern warning to residents of Disah and its surrounding communities in the North Gonja District, following a wave of unexplained cattle deaths.

In a citinewsroom.com report on September 9, 2025, Dr Benjamin Kissi Sasu, Risk Communications Officer at Veterinary Services, said samples from the affected cattle have been dispatched to the Central Veterinary Laboratory for testing, with results expected by Wednesday September 10, 2025.

“Currently, those who find themselves in areas of affected animals, should quickly report the situation to the nearest veterinary centre or facility in their municipality or locality; so that other samples could be sent for screening and subsequent feedback. We want to advise residents to be wary of the situation and avoid consumption of animals who die under unexplained circumstances,” he cautioned.

The deaths reportedly followed vaccinations administered by a foreign worker engaged by some local farmers, raising concerns over animal health practices in the area.

North Gonja District Environmental Health Officer, Adam Mary, said public announcements have been made to prevent contaminated meat from entering the food chain.

Warnings have also been extended to meat vendors in nearby towns and the Tamale slaughterhouse to be circumspect in the purchase of cattle from affected town and its environs.

Authorities have assured residents of continuous monitoring but urged the public to remain vigilant, stressing that consuming affected cattle could pose serious health risks to humans.
