VORSAG blames poor performance in schools on indiscipline

Ho, April 20, GNA-The Volta Region Students Association-Ghana (VORSAG) on Thursday attributed the general fall in standards of education in the country to indiscipline among students, especially in the second cycle institutions.

A press statement signed by Mr. Emmanuel Gemegah, Chairman, Publicity and Education Committee, and copied to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) listed absenteeism and complacency as some of the traits among students that affect their performance. The statement also cited indecent dressing as among other tendencies that contribute to disturb the focus of the young ones. It called for regular in-service training for teachers in the rural areas to enable them to improve on their performance so that the country could benefit from the monies being spent on the implementation of the Free Compulsory and Universal Basic Education (FCUBE) programme. The statement also mentioned lack of basic infrastructure in the schools and the staff-student ratios as factors contributing to the fall education standards.

It cautioned that if these problems were not addressed the situation could further deteriorate. The statement commended government for the implementation of the FCUBE programme and pledged to support it with its annual holiday voluntary teaching programme in the Volta Region. It said the sixth in the series would begin in June this year and would target deprived schools in some selected districts in the region. The statement said the association had resolved that its membership in the various tertiary institutions should adopt particular schools in specified districts in the Region for the next five years. It said this would enable the association to appraise the programme.

It therefore called for support for the programme from stakeholders in education in the Region. 20, April 06
