The Upper West Regional Police Command on March 5, 2026, received the Member of Parliament for Wa West District, Hon. Peter Lanchene Toubu, and the District Chief Executive, Richard Wullo, during a courtesy call on the command.
During the meeting, the two sides discussed and assessed the security situation in the Wa West District, as well as ongoing police operational strategies.
The Upper West Regional Police Commander, DCOP Francis Yiribaare, briefed them on the status of police investigations into several incidents recorded in the district over the past two years. He indicated that while some of the cases are currently before the courts, others remain under investigation.
He also noted that criminal activity in the district remains generally low due to security measures implemented in collaboration with key stakeholders. However, he highlighted that occasional tensions, largely fueled by longstanding tribal feuds, continue to pose a concern.
According to him, these tensions often lead to the generalisation of crimes along tribal and group lines rather than focusing on individual criminal responsibility, a situation that exacerbates community mistrust and tensions in the district.
At the end of the engagement, both sides reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening collaboration and coordination.
They also pledged to work closely with other relevant stakeholders, including traditional authorities and the youth, to address deep-rooted ethnic tensions and enhance peace, security, and development in the district.
