The University of Ghana launched a book on the country’s demographic trends and their implications for development on Tuesday, March 3, 2026.

The book, titled “Ghana’s Demography: Evolution and Implication for Development”, offers valuable insights for scholars and policymakers on shifting fertility and mortality patterns. It also examines the forces of migration and urbanization, unpacking the dynamic interplay between population trends and social progress.

It highlights the consequences of demographic change, including ageing, education, health, poverty, and environmental sustainability, with each chapter delivering rigorous analysis and policy-relevant recommendations.

The Provost of the College of Humanities, Prof. Joseph Awetori Yaro, stated that the book will serve as a guide for policymakers in making prudent decisions on demographic issues, as well as a resource for students and teachers.

He also urged students to desist from overreliance on Artificial Intelligence (AI), warning that it could corrupt their intellect.

“This book will advance the development of Ghana and the university as a whole. It is a resourceful material for policymakers to plan effectively. The dissemination strategy ensures the book reaches beyond academia. It speaks to cross-country learning and collaborative research. We need to follow the book to avoid a demographic bomb, as it enriches teaching and learning, shapes postgraduate education, and strengthens academic work. Read the book and avoid the use of AI,” he said.

Meanwhile, an official from the Ghana Statistical Service applauded the authors for producing such a unique piece that will transform policy decisions.

“For us, this publication reinforces the importance of collaboration between academia and policymakers. We commend the contributors for this achievement. May this book inspire action to ensure Ghana becomes a hub of attraction,” the official said.

The editors of the book are top-notch academicians including Prof. Ayaga A. Bawah, Prof Stephen Owusu Kwankye and Senior Lecturer Pearl Kyei.
