UEW matriculates fresh students on Winneba campus

Professor Akwasi Asabere-Ameyaw, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Education (UEW), has said that the University is committed to the training of high quality and well-behaved professionals for the nation.

Prof Asabere-Ameyaw who made these remarks at the matriculation of 5,860 fresh students to the University to undertake Degree, Diploma and Certificate courses at the Winneba Campus for the 2014/2015 academic year, said 10,292 students applied for the courses, but 5,860 were admitted due to limited resources.

He was happy that admissions into the regular programmes of the University have increased by more than 100 percent, and said this should enable the University to fill the teacher shortfall in schools.

“Let us note that the UEW is the only University in Ghana that is totally committed to the development of human resource needs of the educational set-up, and my administration is religiously committed to that.”

Prof Asabere-Ameyaw said a total of 1,030 application were received for the Post-graduate programmes, but 506 were offered admission and 255 registered.

He said the University needs to improve and expand the facilities, as it makes conscious efforts to replace antiquated equipment inherited from the diploma awarding institution, established well over half a century ago.

'These facilities obviously cannot adequately help to train competent teachers that can comfortable face the challenges of the twenty first century classroom,' he pointed out

He, therefore, appealed to government and all who desire quality teaching in the school, to come to the aid of the University.

He stated that in their present situation, UEW still ranked among the best on the African continent.

The VC told the fresh students that the Matriculation ceremony and their oath taking signifies their formal admission into the university.

Dr C. Y. Acquah, registrar of the University, administered the Matriculation Oath to the fresh students.
