UEW develops HIV/AIDS policy

Mampong (Ash), Oct 24, GNA - The Academic Board of the University of Education Winneba (UEW) has approved an HIV/AIDS policy, Professor Jophus Anamoah-Mensah, Vice-Chancellor, announced at Mampong on Saturday.

Speaking at the matriculation of fresh students at the Mampong College of Agriculture of UEW, he said in view of the devastating nature of the pandemic, the University deemed it necessary to provide a framework to maintain a healthy work force and students through a preventive and supportive structure.

He mentioned the specific objectives of the policy as the creation of awareness among the university community through information and prevention of the disease.

It would integrate HIV/AIDS programmes into teaching research and community services to build a caring and socially engaged community based on the integrity and respect for human beings. It would also encourage and provide support and counselling services for persons living with HIV/AIDS.

Prof Anamoah-Mensah said the university had developed responses to some of the President's Special Initiatives (PSI), which include oil palm through the training that the students were being introduced to. The University, he said, was also exploring the use of Information Communication Technology (ICT) in enhancing the capacity of practitioners on the field.

The Vice-Chancellor announced that a total of 531 applications were received for the B.Ed Agriculture Education programme for the academic year out of which only 221 were admitted.

Professor Ambrose Kwame Tuah, Principal of the Mampong Campus, announced that the College would soon become a pre-eminent institution of choice for teacher education in agricultural science, agro-forestry and allied sciences in Ghana and one of the best in Africa.

He asked graduates of agriculture to develop the capacity for entrepreneurship and result-orientated programmes for the management of resources to be creators of wealth.
