Two die in rainstorm

Manso-Abodom (Ash), Jan. 31, GNA - Two people died and 15 others sustained various degrees of injury, when a severe rainstorm hit four communities in the Amansie West District of Ashanti last Saturday. About 250 houses were destroyed in the storm, rendering about 800 people homeless.

The dead were identified as Akwasi Ampofo, 35, and Adwoa Addai, a three-year-old girl, while the seriously injured were rushed to the Agroyesum hospital.

The four communities are Manso-Abodom, Manso-Abodom-Dome, Manso-Akropong and Antoakrom.

At Manso-Abodom, about 140 houses were destroyed during which the two people died, while others sustained injuries. At Abodom-Dome, 90 houses were destroyed resulting in the injury of six people and at Manso-Akropong, 16 houses' roofs were ripped off and one person was injured while at Antoakrom, the roofs of four houses were ripped off. Conducting Mr Animuonyam Osei-Bonsu, the Amansie West District Co-ordinator of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and the press around the affected communities, Mr Yaw Nuamah, the assemblyman for the area, said the storm lasted for about 20 minutes. Mr Nuamah and the chiefs of Manso-Abodom and Abodom-dome appealed to NADMO, the district assembly, NGOs and other philanthropic bodies to come to the aid of the displaced persons, who now put up in classrooms and churches.
