Two die at Kpone as stone quarry caves in

Kpone, Sept. 25, GNA -- Tragedy hit Tema Municipality on Tuesday morning when a stone quarry at Kpone caved in killing two persons instantly.

Benjamin Kofi Adampah, a 32-year-old stone digger and Charity Salumah, a 37-year-old stone cracker, met their untimely death at about 1030 hours when they were digging gravels at the quarry. When Ghana News Agency visited the scene at about 1330 hours, the two bodies were in the gravel's pit with Adampah's intestines gushed out.

Mr Noah Adampah, brother of the late Adampah, told GNA that his brother who resides at Kakasunanka Number Two near Michel Camp, was digging, while Charity, a mother of two, who also resides at Ashaiman was collecting the gravels dug out when the incident occurred. Nii Laryea Afotey Agbo, Member of Parliament for Kpone-Katamanso who was at the scene, advised people involved in sand and stone quarrying, to take measures that would ensure their safety. Nii Agbo said "when you dig a particular place for a long time, move to another section to avoid such incidents".

He called on authorities to monitor activities of small-scale miners when they release their lands for such purposes. Assistant Superintendent of Police, Joseph Agbenam, Kpone District Police Commander, told GNA that the bodies would be sent to the Police Hospital Morgue.
