Two combine efforts against child labour

The Asante-Akim Central Municipality and the World Cocoa Foundation (WCF) are jointly funding the construction of a multi-purpose information communication technology (ICT) centre at Dwease in a united response to help the community.

Even before it becomes ready, the Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communication (GIFEC) has made available 20 desktop computers and accessories towards it.

Mr. William Ansah Kwakye, the Municipal Director of the Social Welfare Department, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that it formed part of the national programme for the elimination of worst forms of child labour in cocoa growing areas

He said it would serve as a learning center for school children, especially those rescued from child labour to arouse interest and sustain their enthusiasm in education.

Reporters of the Agency had gone to the place under STAR-Ghana’s sponsored media auditing and tracking of development projects, an initiative launched to put the spotlight on how government’s resources were helping to transform the lives of the people, particularly the rural population.

The goal is to aid accountability, promote transparency and good local governance.

Mr. Kwakye said the expectation was that it would become fully operational by the middle of December.

The construction works are now over 90 per cent complete and works such as plumbing and electrical fittings are underway.
