Total launches road safety campaign for pupils

Total Petroleum Ghana Limited has launched a road safety campaign targeted at pupils in basic and junior high schools in the Volta Region.

Using the Total Safety Cube, which is a global initiative of the Total Group, the campaign involved practical demonstrations and very interactive sessions with the pupils both within the schools and on the highways.

A statement from Total Petroleum said the exercise, which was organised in collaboration with the National Road Safety Commission and the Global Road Safety Partnership, targeted communities located along highways where the risk of pupils being knocked down was high such as: Peki, Tsito, Anyrawase, Ho and Ave.

The Volta Regional Manager of the National Road Safety Commission, Sebastian Akyeampong, who took part in the exercise, was very appreciative of Total’s intervention.

“We, of the V/R National Road Safety Commission, are appreciative of the timely and productive CSR- Safety Cube Programme we had from Total and look forward to the possibility of a wider coverage”.

The Total Safety Cube, which was introduced five years ago, is made up of various educational materials such as road signs, road markings and general instruction manuals to educate school children about the dangers of road usage.

The pupils were given the opportunity to trace the routes from their homes to school. During the process, they identified each danger spot where they placed the appropriate road sign.

At least 4,000 pupils received education on road safety signs and dangers to watch out for on their way to school.

Pupils from ages six to 17, who took part in the road safety exercises, are expected to serve as road safety ambassadors in their various communities.

Emmanuel Menya Hughes, in-charge of External Affairs of Total Petroleum Ghana, said:“This initiative of playing and learning at the same time will definitely instil the lessons in their memory. This is certainly in line with Total’s efforts at ensuring road safety since we are major stakeholders in the Ghanaian road sector”.

This brings to four, the number of regions in Ghana which have benefited from the Total Safety Cube Campaign, made up of Greater Accra, Ashanti and Central regions.

Besides receiving a Total Safety Cube to continue with the campaign, the schools were also feted by Total Ghana.
