In its bid to improve the quality of education in deprived communities, Tigo Ghana, a telecommunication company, has put up a six unit classroom block for the Obeng Yaw Basic School in Adeiso in the Eastern Region.

Constructed under the company’s new corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiative ‘Shelter 4 Education,’ the fully furnished classrooms come with a headmaster’s office, a staff common room, a KVIP and a pantry.

The Obeng Yaw Basic School is the first beneficiary under the initiative that would see Tigo renovate two and build four new schools in makeshift structures across the country.

“Education is key in building a great nation and for Tigo, we want to contribute in shaping the lives of these children who in future will build Ghana,” Ms Roshi Motman, the Chief Executive Officer of Tigo Ghana said at a ceremony to hand over the keys to the building to the chief and people of the Obeng Yaw community.

“Helping them get quality basic education is important because that is the foundation to shaping their dreams and ensuring they help build a better Ghana,” she said.

Ms Motman said Tigo’s new CSR programme Shelter 4 Education would over the next few months focus attention on renovating and building makeshift school structures.

She said by providing the pupils with a conducive learning environment, they could concentrate on their studies and have a brighter future.

Besides, Tigo would also provide the pupils school uniforms, books and other branded gift items.

Nana Obeng Yaw II, Chief of the community, lauded Tigo Ghana for the initiative and pledged to ensure the new building is well maintained for the benefit of the children in the community.

Gifty Bingley, Head of Corporate Communications Tigo, said the company has in place an elaborate maintenance plan under the initiative to ensure that the classroom buildings are well preserved.

Beneficiaries communities for Shelter 4 Education programme this year are Ejura Sekyere-Dumase MA School, St Joseph Primary School in Obuasi, Tupaa Basic School in Ga South of the Greater Accra Region, Obeng Yaw Basic School in Adeiso of the Eastern Region, Dimabi Nursery and Primary School in Tolon Kumbumgu of the Northern Region and Banda Ahenkro MA School in Banda Ahenkro of the Brong Ahafo Region.
