Three in court for assaulting policemen

Sunyani, July 16, GNA - Three residents of Odumase near Sunyani on Tuesday appeared before the Sunyani Magistrate Court (One) for assaulting two policemen.

Samuel Asare Korang, Kwasi Appiah and Kofi Owusu pleaded not guilty to seven counts of causing unlawful harm, resisting arrest, deceiving public officer, conspiracy to commit crime, assaulting public officer, rioting and failure to prevent a felony.

They were granted 10 million cedis bail with a surety each to reappear on August 6.

The court issued a bench warrant for the arrest of one Evans Kofi Tabiri, prime suspect in the case.

Sergeant Prosper K. Okla, told the court that on August 20 last year, Constable Sampson Aloko and Constable Elijah Agurimah of Sunyani District Police Station went to Odumase to invite Tabiri, now at large, to give a statement in an assault case. The policemen later followed to arrest Tabiri after failing to respond to the invitation but he resisted and a struggle between them drew a mob to the scene. He said the mob assaulted the policemen, wounding Constable Aloko in the left ear. Constable Aloko bled from the wound, collapsed and was taken to the Sunyani Government Hospital where he was treated and discharged. The prosecutor said the mob escaped from the town but were arrested later at their hide out.
