Three Senior High Schools in Bongo to benefit from World Bank

Three Senior High Schools in the Bongo District of the Upper East Region are to benefit from a World Bank Programme of 600,000 US Dollars.

The Schools are the Bongo Senior High School, Gowrie Senior High School and Zorko Senior High School. Each school is to receive 200,000 US Dollars for infrastructural development.

The District Chief Executive (DCE) for the area, Mr Alexis Ayamdor who disclosed this during this year’s Independence Day Celebration held in Bongo on Friday said additionally the programme dubbed “Secondary Education Improvement Project” would support brilliant but needy students, particularly the girl child with scholarship package worth 120,000 US Dollars each from a different package.

The DCE said through the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFUND) many educational infrastructures had been provided including school buildings, hospitals, roads, electricity and water among others and indicated that in 2014 alone several projects were awarded all geared towards the improvement of education in the District.

He mentioned the construction of three-unit classroom block with other facilities at T.I Ahmadiya , Beon and Tandongo Junior High Schools, three classroom blocks both at Kangkoo and Atampintim and metal desk including the construction of one storey classroom block each both at Soe Senior High and Azeem-Namoo Senior High Schools.

Mr Ayamdor who expressed regret about the fallen standards of education in the District stated that the Assembly together with the District Education Directorate had put in place many measures such as the Teachers Award Scheme and stepping up supervision roles to sanction deviant teachers.

“Another measure is the re-institution of support to students at the Teacher Training Colleges to retain them after completion so as to help augment the teaching staff in the District,” he added.

He however indicated that without unity it would be difficult for government and the District Assembly to execute projects and programmes in the area and appealed to all to respect one another’s view.

The District Director of Education, Mr Emmanuel Zumakpe warned that his outfit would not countenance absenteeism, drunkenness and lateness of teachers to school and impressed upon parents to constantly visit the school to check the children’s performance and to interact with the teachers.

He also entreated parents who have not yet sent their children, of school going age, to school to do so and stressed that they stood to benefit enormously in future if they did that.

About 33 schools in the District including Christian Mothers, Hairdressers, Seamstresses, Weavers Association ,GNATLASS Ladies among others participated in the event.
