More than 3,500 residents of the Akuapem South Municipality have benefitted from a two-day breast cancer awareness and screening exercise held to coincide with this year’s Odwira Festival celebrations.

The initiative, which aimed at promoting early detection and prevention of breast cancer, brought together students, community members and health professionals for education and medical screening.

The event, held on Thursday 30th and Friday 31st October 2025, took place at the Presbyterian Senior High and Technical School in Aburi and the Diaspora Girls Senior High School in Obodan.

Addressing participants, Osei Mensah Joseph, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of the OMJ Foundation, said the exercise formed part of efforts to support public health education, particularly on women’s health issues.

He expressed satisfaction with the turnout and reaffirmed his commitment to sustaining initiatives that promote the well-being of less-privileged communities.

Mensah used the occasion to educate students and participants on the causes and risk factors of breast cancer, as well as the importance of early screening and adopting healthy lifestyles.

He also encouraged the students to focus on their education and make positive life choices.

“Take proper care of your breasts and your general well-being. Avoid lifestyles that may hinder your growth and chances of achieving your goals,” he advised.

“Stop ‘boyfriendism and girlfriendism’ for now or keep it minimal. Concentrate on your studies, choose friends who inspire you to do better, and always uphold humility and respect,” he added.

Heads of the participating schools, along with staff and other stakeholders, commended the organisers for their commitment to community service and public health advocacy.

They described the sensitisation campaign as timely and impactful, particularly in helping young people understand the importance of early detection in the fight against breast cancer.

The event formed part of nationwide efforts to mark Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which is observed globally every October to raise awareness about the disease and promote early testing and treatment.
