The Bible Movement Society is 200 years

Accra, March 3, GNA - The Bible Society of Ghana (BSG), has since 1998 distributed over 8.6 million pieces of Scripture products free of charge to schools, peace-keeping personnel, prisons and institutions for the blind throughout the country.

The Reverend Kofi Owusu, General Secretary of the society, announced this at a press conference organized to highlight activities marking the bi-centenary celebration of the work of Bible Movement Society worldwide.

Rev Owusu said the distribution was made possible through the generous financial support and commitment of churches and individual Christians over the years.

Activities marking the year-long celebration include handwritten Bible from Genesis to Revelation, handwritten favourite scripture verses, bi-centenary commemorative service, Bible reading marathon, prayer day in partnership with Transformation Africa, bi-centenary Presidential dinner, presentation to foster homes and orphanages and schools, and thanksgiving service.

The Bible Movement Society (BMS), instituted 200 years ago, has as its primary task, the servicing the Scripture needs of all peoples and languages around the world.

It has translated the scriptures in more than 2,300 languages and dialects worldwide ever since.

Rev. Owusu said BSG, an umbrella organization of BMS, since its inception in 1966, has been involved in the translation and publishing of the Bible, portions and scripture products in seven major Ghanaian languages and distributing them at affordable prices.

He named the languages as Ga, Akuapem Twi, Ewe, Fante, Asante Twi, Nzema and Dangme, adding that a new Ga Bible and the New Testament in Esahie (Sefwi) would soon be out of the press.

The society, he said, would soon launch a five billion-cedi fund to help rehabilitate the "aging" Bible House Offices, and appealed to the public and Christian organizations to assist in achieving the goal.
