Tenants in Western Region being ejected

Takoradi, Dec.7, GNA - A Principal Rent Officer at the Rent Control Department, Mr. Twum Ampofo, has said the Department had received several complaints from tenants that they were being ejected from their rooms by landlords and landladies following the oil discovery in the Western Region. He said some homwownerss in the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis were ejecting their tenants in order to convert them into offices and stalls for the oil companies and businesses.

This, he said in an interview with the GNA, had resulted in litigation between landlords and tenants.

Mr. Ampofo said his outfit had invited the feuding parties for amicable settlement and urged persons who were facing wrongful ejection to report to the Department for peaceful resolution. He said legally if a howmowner wanted to eject a tenant, the former must serve a quit notice to the latter one month earlier so that the tenant could look for another accommodation.

Mr. Ampofo said house owners were not supposed to take more than six months' rent advance from tenants. He appealed to tenants to always look out for basic facilities such as water, electricity, kitchen, toilet and bathhouse before renting. 07 Dec. 10
