Ten communities in Wa East District join Wa West District

Taninina (U/W), May 12, GNA - The Taninina Electoral Area which comprises 10 communities in the Wa East District has been transferred to the Wa West District. The transfer of these communities, which have a population of 7,334, followed agitations by the people to leave the Wa East since the two districts were carved out of the Wa District in 2004.

This development was made possible by a Legislative Instrument (LI1983) passed last year. Prior to the departure of these communities to the Wa West District, they had to cover a distance of about 120 kilometres travelling through Wa the regional capital to Funsi, the district capital of Wa East District to transact official business.

By joining the Wa West District with which the area has a common boundary, their travelling distance to their district capital at Wechiau has been reduced to 40 kilometres. The key communities involved are Taninina, Polee, Nako, Sagibaluu, Bichuuyiri and Laniyiri. Speaking at brief ceremony at Tanina to hand over the communities, Mr. Amin Salifu the Wa East District Chief Executive, said he was sad that the communities were leaving his district.

He however, expressed the hope that they would continue to benefit from the 93Better Ghana Agenda" of President John Atta Mills in their new district. He cited the construction of boreholes, school buildings, bridges and culverts as some of the projects undertaken in the Taninina area in the last two years.

Mr. Seidu Tungbani, Wa West District Chief Executive, promised to do everything within his capacity and power to assist in promoting successful development and prosperity of the Taninina Electoral Area. He urged the elders, Assembly members, opinion leaders and citizens of the area to show their concern and honour their obligations as drivers of development to complement government's effortsa.

Mr Tungbani mentioned poor academic performance and low revenue generation as the most challenges in the district and called on parents to ensure that their children of school going-age are in school.
