Tema to undertake monumental projects

... to mark Ghana's 50th anniversary

Tema, Feb.2, GNA - Tema, the busiest sea port city and industrial nerve of Ghana is to execute monumental projects to mark the country's Golden Jubilee celebrations, the Municipal Chief Executive, Mr David Quaye Annang, said on Thursday.

Addressing a press conference to outline activities lined by the Municipality for the celebration, Mr Annang said a central library in the city would be refurbished into a modern learning centre with Information Communication Technology facilities.

He said the city's streets would be named while lighting system along ceremonial roads and pavements would be improved, and that new monuments would also be built at designated sites 93to depict the culture and uniqueness of the city."

He said 800 million cedis had been budgeted for the celebration in the municipality.

Mr Annang said the unique role Tema has played in the economic advancement of the nation in the past 50 years calls for special observation of the anniversary.

Besides, it would also afford residents an opportunity to assess the achievements of Tema in line with the dreams and aspirations of the founding fathers and how the city could re-position to help accelerate the growth of the nation.

He urged the old, young and stakeholders to contribute positively towards the success of the celebrations, which he said, include sustaining environmental cleanliness to enable the city befit its planned structure.

Mr Annang asked property owners and occupants to beautify them and that illegal structures along the streets would be demolished. On specific detail of the programme of activities, the city Mayor said there would be an exhibition to showcase products of the various industries in Tema; a fitness walk by people of 50 years and above; cultural festival; children's assembly; regatta; carnivals; clean-up exercises; a float; interdenominational church services; Muslims prayers; as well as the jubilee parade on March six. Institutions and Senior citizens who have contributed positively towards the growth of the city would also be awarded to commemorate the event, he stated.
