Tema Police appeals for headquarters building

The Tema Police Command has appealed to organisations and individuals to help it construct an office building and conference facilities for its operations.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP), Mrs Beatrice Zakpaa Vib-Sanziri, Tema Regional Police Commander, who made the appeal, said the regional headquarters was currently being housed by the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA).

DCOP Vib-Sanziri, who was speaking at the Command's 2014 annual West Africa Security Services Activities (WASSA), explained that the Command had acquired a piece of land from the Tema Development Corporation at Community Seven, which had been lying fallow for several years.

She stated that the lack of adequate offices for units of the regional headquarters had also resulted in serious overcrowding the current building.

The Tema Police Commander said her outfit with approval from the Police Administration would seek private partnership to develop all of its lands, including the one at Community Three, as a matter of urgency.

On land dispute issues in the Region, she expressed worry over activities of land guards, particularly, in areas within the Ashaiman, Dodowa and Prampram districts.

DCOP Vib-Sanziri gave the assurance that the Command would continue to deal ruthlessly with these heavily armed land guards by arresting and prosecuting them.

She warned the personnel of the Police Service and other security agencies who aided land guards or engaged in land guard activities to desist from such acts or have themselves to blame.

She also advised parties in land related matters to resort to the law courts, rather than taking the law into their own hands.

The Commander noted that there was a downward trend in major crimes such as armed robbery, murder, rape and defilement in the Region as a result of some effective and efficient measures put in place by her outfit.

The measures include, surveillance and gathering of intelligence on crime, swoops, increase and sustained day and night patrols, snap checks, increased accessibility to public visibility and the introduction of regional monitoring teams.

She stated that the creation of credible informants had contributed to the arrest of more than 30 suspected armed robbers, some of whom were being prosecuted while others were in jail.
