Tema Customs Division assists special schools

The Tema Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) on Wednesday presented cash of GHC5,000 and some items to the Twin-City Special School for the mentally handicapped at Essipong.

Chief Revenue Officer of the Division, Mr. Emmanuel Ohene presented the cash and the items, made up of 20 bags of rice, quantity of gari and cooking oil, to Mrs. Elizabeth Amewowor, Headmistress of the school at a short ceremony at the school.

Mr. Ohene said the division raised some money during the first anniversary celebration of its choir, the Maritime Voices, and it was decided that the money should be given to distressed schools and the needy in the country.

He said the difficulties the school was going through came to the attention of the division, and they decided to assist, as part of its Social Corporate Responsibility.

Mrs. Amewowor thanked the division for the gesture to the school.

She said the school sometimes goes public with her problems to draw the attention of individuals and corporate bodies to compliment government’s support to the school.

In another development, Mr. Ohene on behalf of the Customs Division also presented cash of GHC1,700 and 10 bags of rice to the Sekondi School for the Deaf at Inchaban.

Mr. Kofi Oti Frempong, Headmaster of the School, who received the donation, said the school needed more teachers to ensure effective supervision of the children.

He said the school has about 325 pupils and 25 teaching staff.

Mr. Frempong said pupils who have completed pre-school training at the school have been placed on a waiting list because of congestion in the classrooms and dormitories.
