Techiman Municipal Assembly inaugurates unit committees

Techiman (B/A), May 23, GNA - Mr Alex Kofi Kyeremeh, Techiman Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) has observed that the decentralisation policy that gave birth to the unit committees should not lead to the polarisation of the members.

He said the committees were meant to deepen the decentralisation process and serve as a baseline for development. Mr Kyeremeh made the observation during the inauguration of the 85- unit committee members of the 17 electoral areas, which constituted the Techiman Zonal Council.

The 85 committee members comprised 12 women representatives. Similar inaugurations were held in the nine zonal councils in the Techiman North and Techiman South constituencies. The committees were Tanoso, Aworowa, Buoyem, Tuobodom, Offuman, Nsuta, Kuntunso, Nkweaso and Krobo. Mr Kyeremeh said the decentralization policy, which started two decades ago sought to promote grass root participation in the governance system, democratisation and decentralisation. He reminded the members to forge unity of purpose in their communities in order to promote the development agenda.

The MCE tasked members of the committees to be front-liners in the generation of revenue to help the Municipal Assembly to embark on development projects. Mr Kyeremeh said they could do these by keeping records of all rateable persons and properties in their communities and also help the Assembly in its revenue mobilisation efforts.

He charged the committee members to wage war against the outbreak of bush and domestic fires. He said the clarion call of the Government towards the decentralisation system was to ensure a balanced development of deprived communities as a social obligation imposed by the Directive Principles of State Policy. Mr Addai Simons, Member of Parliament for Techiman South who presided over the function asked the unit committee members to be dedicated and work hard for the development of their areas. He advised them to put their personal interest behind and work for the betterment of their communities. Mr Simons reminded the members of the need to co-operate with one another and refrain from dabbling in partisan politics.
