Teachers learn about the constitution

Sunyani, Nov 10, GNA- Mr Samuel Akuamoah of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) at the weekend urged teachers to become conversant with the constitution so they could impart that to their students.

Mr Akuamoah stated that knowledge of the constitution would enable every Ghanaian to appreciate his or her rights and responsibilities and defend it.

Speaking at a one-day workshop for 50 teachers in junior secondary schools in Brong Ahafo on the constitution game project, he said most teachers in the country were ignorant about the constitution. The Project is organized by Democracy of Human Rights Fund of the US Embassy in Ghana and is a nation-wide activity to introduce the constitution game to teachers and students in junior and senior secondary schools.

After practising the game with NCCE officials, many of the teachers confessed that their knowledge about the constitution was limited. Mr. Addai Takyi-Abeam, a teacher of the Sunyani High Street JSS, said scarcity of copies of the constitution is one of the factors that contributed to the ignorance of many people about the constitution. He appealed to the NCCE to impress on the Ministry of Information to make copies of the constitution available in bookshops and affordable to the public.
