Teachers given awards

Daniel Syme, Deputy Upper East Regional Minister, said parents now had little fate in teachers because their children were no more passing the two major external examinations in the country.

The examinations are the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) for Junior High School candidates and the West Africa Secondary School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

Mr Syme said this at the weekend during this year’s World Teachers’ Day celebrations and appealed to the teachers to work hard towards reversing the trend.

He expressed regret that teachers, who were supposed to be the agents of change, sometimes engaged in negative activities and cautioned them against exhibiting such negative attitudes including engaging in amorous relationships with their pupils and abuse of alcohol.

Mr Syme said it had always been the desire of the government to put in place good working conditions of service for all workers including teachers and that government was also committed to ensuring that teachers had conducive environment.

Mr Augustine Bugase, District Director of Education, appealed to teachers to upgrade themselves academically and be committed to duty by making optimum and effective use of the contact hours.

The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), organizers of the programme, presented awards to deserving teachers.
