Tano North MP improves educational infrastructure in public schools

Mrs Freda Prempeh, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Tano North in the Ahafo Region on Tuesday affirmed her commitment to improve educational infrastructure to enhance enrollment in public schools in the area.

This would create sound environment that would facilitate effective teaching and learning and enable majority of qualified students to have the chance to be admitted into secondary schools to benefit from the government’s Free Senior High School (SHS) programme.

In an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Duayaw-Nkwanta, Mrs. Prempeh who is the Deputy Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection said she would not relent on efforts to make good use of her position to lobby support to address shortfalls in educational infrastructure in the area.

She indicated that education remained “an essential commodity” to push forward socio-economic development, therefore MPs, District and Municipal Assemblies must augment government’s effort to make quality education easily accessible to the people.

Touching on some educational projects she implemented in her constituency, Mrs. Prempeh said the Yamfo Anglican SHS benefited from 12-unit classroom block, 600 desks, and 100 bags of cement to complete an assembly hall project.

Mrs Prempeh said she provided two 20-seater male and female water closet toilets, mechanised borehole and library books and additional 100 bags of cement for the Bomaa SHS, whilst she was putting up dining hall and kitchen for the Boakye Tromo SHS which is almost complete.

The Serwaa Kesse SHS also benefited from 20 seater toilet each for male and female students while Bomaa Roman Catholic Primary and JHS also benefited from six-unit classroom block, three water closet toilets, computer room, staff room, and head teacher’s office.

Mrs Prempeh said construction work on six-unit classroom block for the Bomaa Methodist Primary and JHS was progressing steadily, while another three-unit classroom block for the Nkurakai local primary and six-unit classroom block for the Mankranho local Primary schools were virtually completed.

She said construction work on a kindergarten block for Tano Ano community was approved and would soon commence, adding that she extended electricity to the Susuaho local Roman Catholic Primary and JHS.

Four basic schools at Tanoso, Duayaw-Nkwanta and Koforidua also benefited from ICT centres to enhance the study of computer.

In addition, the MP said she donated more than 1,000 school bags, sandals and library books and dual desks and computers to almost all the basic schools in the constituency.

Mrs. Prempeh added that for the past six years she financed Modesty Foundation, an NGO to organise vacation and extra classes to prepare final year students adequately to write the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) which was making significant impact and improving on the performance of the students.
