Swedru chiefs unhappy over poor BECE results

The Education Sub-Committee of the Swedruman Council of Chiefs has expressed disappointment over the poor BECE results in the Municipality in 2013.

No candidate from nine schools in the Municipality scored aggregate between six-30 to qualify to gain admission into senior high schools.

Nana Esieni I, Nifahene of Swedruman Council of Chiefs, said this after members had visited final year students of junior high schools at Agona Swedru.

The Committee expressed regret that over 1,000 candidate’s future cannot be guaranteed due to their bad performance in the Basic Education Certificate Examination.

He said the visit was to encourage the students and teachers to give off their best to reverse the poor BECE results in the Agona West Municipality, especially Agona Swedru.

Schools visited included Swedru Methodist A/B JHS, Swedru Roman Catholic A/B JHS, Urban A/B Schools, Anglican JHS, Assemblies of God Preparatory JHS, Royal Academy JHS, Good News Preparatory JHS.

Nana Esieni appealed to the School Management Committees (SMC), PTAs, chiefs, traditional rulers and stakeholders in education to put in their maximum efforts to improve standard of education in the Municipality.

He said the visit revealed that some schools lacked chalks, textbooks and other teaching materials. He said it also came to their notice that majority of the final year students after registering with West Africa Examination Council (WAEC) had stopped going to school due to alleged financial constraints facing their parents and guardians.

The chief said the Council would collaborate with the Agona West Municipal Assembly and Ghana Education Service Directorate to sensitize parents and others on the need to provide basic needs to the children.
