Suspension of 18 pupils at Adankwame lifted

Adankwame (Ash), Oct. 27, GNA - The authorities of the Adankwame Basic School have lifted a suspension imposed on the 18 final-year pupils of the school who were alleged to have committed various acts of indiscipline on the school premises.

This followed the intervention of the Atwima-Nwabiagya District Education Directorate, after consultations with the teachers, parents of the affected pupils, the chief and elders, the School Management Committee (SMC) and the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) at Adankwame on Thursday.

The pupils and their parents have, however, been made to sign an undertaking for the affected pupils to be of good behaviour until they leave the school.

They were alleged to have been heavily drunk and consequently stole a quantity of bread from a local grocery, while others also engaged in gambling on the school premises during contact hours. The parents of the pupils had earlier apologised to the school authorities but officers from the Education Directorate seriously reprimanded one of the parents, Madam Afua Sika, who sold the liquor to the pupils.

Mr Wilson Awuah-Dartey, an Assistant Director of Education in-charge of Supervision, told the parents that the children's behaviour was of great concern to the Directorate and other well-meaning education stakeholders.

He attributed some of the causes of the children's behaviour to the improper upbringing and training given to them at home and advised them to be more concerned about the future of their children. Mr Stephen Gyasi-Debrah, the District Education Planning Team (DEPT) Officer, said the incident had cast a slur o the image on the community and advised the parents to help the school authorities to maintained discipline in the school. Mr Stephen Osei-Appiah, Adankwame Circuit Supervisor, enumerated a number of undisciplined acts perpetrated by pupils in the school including sexual immorality, threatening and invoking curses on the teachers.

Nana Yiadom Boakye, Regent of Adankwame, on behalf of the community, thanked the teachers for lifting the suspension and gave the assurance that such acts would not occur any longer.
