Sunyani Municipality experiences heavy flood

Some areas in Sunyani and its environs were heavily flooded following Tuesday night’s seven and a half hours torrential rains in the Municipality.

The areas particularly affected were Abesim, Nkwabeng, Nkrankrom and the Bosoma market.

As a result, school children, market women, farmers and the inhabitants got stranded behind the Nsansanim River in the community, which overflowed its banks.

Mr Appiah Kubi an Assemblyman at Abesim told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in an interview that, the river broke and carried away a temporal bridge constructed by the people in the area.

That made it impossible for the people to cross from one end to the other to engage in their daily activities, he said.

Mr Kubi said the bridge which was awarded on contract for reconstruction some years ago had been abandoned.

He said the community had written several letters to the Municipal Assembly to complete the bridge but there had been no positive response.

Mr Vincent Kofi Owusu, The Sunyani Municipal Assembly’s Public Relations Officer (PRO), when contacted, said the Assembly was aware of the situation at Abesim and was making all efforts to re-award the contract to another contractor.

He said the Assembly had started a decongestion exercise in the Municipality to avoid flooding during heavy rains and also to create unimpeded access for the Fire Tenders, in case of fire outbreaks, for quick interventions.

At Fiapre in the Sunyani West District, Mr. David Asomah, a resident in the area said the construction of fence walls by some house owners in the affected areas had blocked the water ways, causing flooding.
