Suhum constituency CPP elects officers

The Suhum constituency branch of the Convention People's Party (CPP) has elected a 10-member executive to steer the affairs of the party for the next two years with Mr Samuel Kwakye as chairman.

Other officers included Mr Joseph Martey, Vice Chairman, Mr Akyem Boadu, Secretary, Mr Richard Gyamfi, Assistant Secretary, Mr Godfried Otibo, Organiser and Mr J.R. Asiedu, Financial Secretary.

In his inaugural address, Nana Owusu Sekyere, the Acting Eastern Regional chairman of the party who supervised the elections, advised the officers to embark on intensive campaign to enable the party to recapture the parliamentary seat at Suhum, which he said was once a stronghold of the CPP.

He said the poor economic conditions in Ghana, have given rise to corruption, armed robberies, indiscipline and general increases in the prices of goods.

Nana Sekyere said whilst the government had asked drivers to increase transport fares by 40 percent, some of the drivers have increased fares by 100 percent.

He said a bag of cement which was selling at 32,000 cedis as factory price by GHACEM, was recently raised to 42,000 cedis at Koforidua after the fuel price increases, and asked the government not only to control the price of cement but all building materials.

Nana Owusu Sekyere said the CPP would reactivate all the factories abandoned after the overthrow of the First Republic if voted into power, adding, "a CPP government will concentrate on home-grown initiatives in order to free Ghana from over dependence on foreign in-flows."

He warned party members to be wary of people who were resurfacing now after they have deserted the party when they sought for and lost positions at the national congress in 2000.

The Regional Secretary, Mr Kwabena Apea, said the party would continue to count on noble achievements of the party during the First Republic and glorify it as "second to none", adding that with its socialist policies "it is the only party that can save Ghana from her current economic mess."
