Students advised against unsafe abortion

A Senior Midwife in the Offinso Municipality, Mrs. Esther Aboagye, has advised students, especially, the girl-child, to avoid unsafe abortion and its related practices and be more focused on their education.

She explained that the practice of unsafe abortion can result in death, bleeding and deformity among children.

Mrs. Aboagye was addressing students of the Buasi Roman Catholic and Anyankaso Junior High School in the Offinso Municipality at separate fora on unsafe abortions and its effects.

The programme was organised jointly by IPAS Ghana and the Centre for Development of People (CEDEP), both non-governmental organisations, and educated the participants about the dangers of such practices.

The Senior Midwife indicated that it was more dangerous for pregnant women to use concocted materials to terminate their pregnancies.

She further indicated that according to the law, safe abortions could only be performed by health personnel at a hospital, health centre or clinic.

Mrs. Abigial Boakye-Yiadom, a Community Nurse at the Offinso Health Centre, also advised the women to adopt family planning methods to avoid pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases, and advised them to abstain from sex as the best way of avoiding pregnancy
