Stakeholders resolve to reverse poor education standards.

Agona-Nkwanta (W/R), Dec 16, GNA- Stakeholders in education in the Agona West district have resolved to coordinate their efforts to reverse the worsening Basic Education Certificate Examination results and the general poor education standards in the district.

At a school performance appraisal meeting at Agona-Nkwanta on Tuesday, they said they could not understand why students from basic schools continue to flop miserably in the BECE even though the district is far better in terms of the provision of facilities including teachers.

The district assembly and the district directorate of education organized the meeting, with sponsorship from the Cooperative League of USA (CLUSA) an American NGO under its Government Accountability Improvement Trust (GAIT) programme.

Participants included chiefs, assembly and unit committee members, circuit supervisors, head teachers and representatives of the various school management committees.

Led in discussions by Madam Rosemond Blay, the District Director of Education, they identified inadequate supervision, poor parental responsibility, poor students attitudes towards learning and lateness to school by teachers as some of the problems militating against the achievement of higher education standards.

Madam Blay said the meeting would afford stakeholders the opportunity to define their roles to enable them to play effective roles in improving education in the district.

Nana Bogu Wiabo, the Presiding Member of the assembly, said the district could boast of better facilities, adequate and qualified teachers and there was no justification for the poor performance in the BECE for the past couple of years.

He urged parents and teachers to be up and doing and lead in the efforts to make education more beneficial to the youth.

Mr Joseph Odoom of the district education office said of the 1,368 students who sat for the BECE this year only 448 passed with aggregates between 6 and 30 representing 32.7 per cent. The district took the 104th position out of the 110 districts in the 2003 BECE in terms of performance.
