Sheikh I.C. Quaye appeals for support

Accra, Dec. 22 GNA - Sheikh Ibrahim Cudjoe Quaye, Greater Accra Regional Minister, on Monday appealed to Denmark to support the Region in its effort to provide portable water and sanitation for the people. He said the support was needed to solve some of the pertinent problems facing the people in the various communities.

Sheikh Quaye said this when he received the new Danish Ambassador to Ghana, Mr Flemming Bjork Pedersen at his Office in Accra. Mr Petersen, who has been in the country since June, has served in similar diplomatic capacities in Tanzania and Uganda for eight years and five years, respectively.

Sheikh Quaye said the problem of sanitation in Accra keeps on increasing every time because over five hundred thousand migrants from various parts of the country enter the city every day.

He also said the Regional Coordinating Council (RCC) a few weeks ago initiated a project to rid the drains of stagnant water, which are the breading grounds of mosquitoes so as to reduce the incidence of malaria.

He said the RCC would welcome any contribution no matter how small from the donor community to help sustain the project.

Mr Pedersen said his country through DANIDA has supported water and sanitation projects in different parts of the country.

He said the Danish Government would continue to support Ghana in her developmental efforts both in the private sector and water and sanitation programmes.
