Shabby dressed drivers to deny loading

Begoro (E/R), Oct. 26, GNA - The Begoro branch chairman of the Taxi Drivers Union of the GPRTU of TUC, Mr Sadiq Opoku, has urged taxi drivers to be disciplined and observe the code of ethics of the driving profession.

Addressing a meeting of taxi drivers at Begoro on Sunday, Mr Opoku asked drivers to dress decently before going to work, warning that any taxi driver who dressed shabbily and wore bathroom sandals to work would be denied loading and would be fined 100,000 cedis.

Mr Opoku asked them to respect traffic regulations so as to avoid falling prey to the police, adding, the union would not go to the aid of any driver, who was arrested by the police for flouting traffic regulations.

He expressed concern at the "monkey game" and the profane language some taxi drivers play and use at the station on their fellow drivers. Mr Opoku asked drivers to respect passengers and stop using indecent language on them and asked them to pay their income tax promptly to generate more income for the government.

He announced that the Union had opened local branches at Koforidua and Ehiamankyene and was making efforts to open more of them within its catchment's areas.

The branch secretary, Mr Opoku Amponsah asked the drivers to pay monthly dues and loading fees promptly to generate enough income for the union.

He asked them also to maintain their vehicles regularly to avoid road accidents.

The members unanimously passed a vote of no confidence in the working committee of the union and elected new committee members to replace them.
