Severe rainstorm hits Karaga District and displaces 2000 people

Karaga (N/R), March 16, GNA - A severe rainstorm on Monday night hit Karaga and its surrounding communities destroying 100 houses and displaced over 2,000 people.

The storm destroyed six public schools including the Karaga Senoir High School and the Isahadia Islamic junior High School. The roofs of the bungalows of the District Chief Executive and the District Coordinating Director and their offices were blown off as well as the roof of the chief's palace.

The storm has also disrupted electricity supply to the district. Mr. Salifu Yakubu, the District Coordinator of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), said the rainstorm affected 10 communities including Bagurugu, Napoligu, Kupali, Peshigu and Nayangblo.

Alhaji Sulemana Hussein Issah, the Karaga District Chief Executive, described the situation as very serious and needed urgent attention as most of the displaced persons were putting up with relatives or friends.

He appealed to NADMO, the government and relief organizations to assist the people.
