Seven illegal miners escape death narrowly

Takoradi, August 1, GNA - Seven small-scale miners (galamsey) operators escaped death narrowly when the pit in which they were working at Dadieso near Wassa-Akropong in the Western Region caved-in on Tuesday. Colleagues rescued the illegal miners including five women and were taken to the Wassa-Akropong Government Hospital where six were treated and discharged. Dr. Frederick Yaw Sarpong, Medical Officer in charge of the hospital, told the Ghana News Agency on telephone that only one of the miners had a compound fracture on one leg. Nine "galamsey" operators were trapped to death in a similar accident at the same area at Dadieso on April 16 this year.
