Seven communities in Agona want to votes to go to Awutu-Senya

Awutu Bontrase (C/R), Oct. 22, GNA - The chiefs and people of seven Awutu speaking communities in Agona have appealed to the Chief Justice to order an Agona Swedru High Court to rescind its ruling that votes from the area be added to the Agona East constituency instead Awutu-Senya.

Addressing a press conference at Awutu Bontrase on Sunday, Mr. Daniel Asomani, Assembly man for the area, said over the years votes from the area were added to the Awutu-Senya constituency until 2000 when the court ruled in favour of the Agona people and ordered the Electoral Commission to add votes from the area to Agona East. He said the people of the seven communities, Bontrase, Kojo Ashen, Akrabong, Kwame Quaye, Ahentia, Akromah, and Asuboo are settler farmers in Agona for years but owe allegiance to the Awutu Traditional Council. "If the anomaly is not corrected it would be very difficult for the people in the seven communities to take part in 2008 general election". Narchey Obaauw, Queen mother for the area, appealed to the government to take the matter very serious and resolve it. "Even if it is true that we are residing on Agona lands it does not mean our identity should change".

The Supi of the Awutu Traditional Council, Mr. Kojo Dwaquaye, said the people of the seven towns are Awutus and speak Awutu language therefore their votes should be added to Awutu-Senya constituency instead of Agona East.

Mr. Solomon Abban Quaye, District Chief Executive for the area, said his office had written to the Central Regional Minister on the matter.
