Seven bags of unwholesome tomato paste destroyed at Kpone

Tema, June 22, GNA - Officials of the Tema Municipal Environmental Health Office and the Food and Drugs Board on Wednesday destroyed seven maxi bags of unwholesome tomato paste at the Kpone refuse disposal site. The puree was seized from a household at Ashaiman who were in the process of re-packaging them into polythene bags for sale. Mr Peter Amuzu, Municipal Environmental Health Officer, said the tomato puree had bad odour and black in colour while the cans had rusted. Mr Amuzu said to discourage exhumation the cans were first crushed, mixed with sand and buried.

Following a tip-off the tomato puree were seized from Madam Adama Chamba, an 80-year-old lady who together with her four grand daughters were emptying them into polythene bags for sale in their house at Ashaiman.

Madam Chambas mentioned his son Sofo Mumuni, a scrap dealer, as the one who collected them from the refuse dump but Mumuni also claimed that he only needed the cans as scraps and was unaware that they intended selling them. Mr Amuzu said the Old lady was brought to the office but was asked to go back because of her condition and would be contacted when needed.
