Sekondi-Takoradi mechanics to re-locate

Takoradi, Feb. 23, GNA - The Shama-Ahanta East Metropolitan Assembly's programme to relocate wayside vehicle mechanics and some gas filling stations in the metropolis is to decongest Sekondi-Takoradi as well as ensure the safety of life and property. Mr John Laste, the assembly's public relations officer, said the assembly would fulfil its promise to provide access roads, water and electricity for a plot of land at nearby Kansaworodo acquired for members of the Ghana National Association of Garages to enable them to relocate as soon as practicable.

He was addressing a meeting of members of the association at Takoradi on Friday to impress on the members the need to move to the designated light industrial area, saying it was part of the assembly's bye-laws that would be enforced to the letter by the end of the year. Mr Laste said with the discovery of oil in the Western Region, authorities anticipate pressure on the community within the next few years and stressed the need to "put things right" before the problem is compounded by the activities of wayside fitters and other groups. Mr Laste said those who would be allocated land at Kansaworodo light industrial area would not be allowed to build residential homes. Mr Kwesi Anwuboh, Western Regional Chairman of the Council of Indigenous Business Association and Mr Jonathan Kwamena Kwadzie, Regional Chairman of the Garages Association, appealed to the Ministry of Trade, non-governmental organisations and other public institutions to help fund the project.
