School bus, girls' hostel for ADISEC

Adiembra (W/R), Oct. 2, GNA - Papa Owusu Ankomah, Minister for Education, Science and Sports, has stated that efforts by the Government to improve education through the provision of facilities and equipment must be made to reflect on the academic performance of these institutions.

He also called for stakeholders' support for the efficient implementation of laudable programmes and policies such as the new academic reforms and the computerised school placement system. Papa Ankomah said these, when he commissioned a 65-seater bus, provided by the GetFund and cut the sod for a girls' hostel for the Adiembra Community Secondary School (ADISEC) at a joint ceremony at Adiembra, near Sekondi at the weekend.

The two-storey hostel, also being funded by the GetFund would be completed in two years at the cost of 3.4 billion cedis. Adiembra Secondary School, the Minister said is the most deprived school in the Shama Ahanta East Metropolis and therefore, everything would be done to support it to be at level with other schools in terms of facilities and equipment to enhance teaching and learning. Papa Ankomah advised the school's authorities to take good care of the bus and use it solely for the benefits and welfare of students and staff and not for private purpose.

He said at the moment, teacher-training colleges and girls' schools had been provided with buses and the Ministry would soon procure 50 buses that would be distributed to boys' schools in the country. Mr Evans Anthony Amoah, Western Regional Minister advised students to make optimum use of their time by working hard to excel in examinations that would prepare them for a brighter future.

He also asked them to make good use of facilities provided by the government.

Madam Mary Jemima Arthur, Headmistress of the school expressed her gratitude to the government for the support and said this would inspire both teachers and students to work hard.

She appealed for the supply of computers for the school. Madam Rebecca Dadzie, Regional Director of Education said enrolment at the Adiembra Secondary School, as well as academic results had improved considerably over the last couple of years.

Papa Ankomah at another ceremony cut the sod for work to begin on a new dormitory for the Saint Joseph's Secondary School at Sekondi. The project, which is being funded by the GetFund would cost 800 million cedis and expected to be completed within 18 months. He said steps would be taken to improve facilities at the school's science laboratory.
