The Savelugu Municipal Assembly has supported 193 people with disabilities (PWDs) with cash and ruminants to make them more self-sufficient and improve their living standards.

About 73 beneficiaries received three ruminants (Sheep) each whiles the rest received an amount of Seven Hundred Ghana Cedis (700) to expand their businesses.

The support coming from the disability fund under the District Assembly’s Common Fund (DACF) is to support people with disabilities to be self-reliance.

Presenting the items to beneficiaries, the Municipal Chief Executive of Savelugu, Hon Hajia Ayishetu Seidu disclosed that, the Assembly has 550 registered disabled persons who are benefiting from the Disability Fund, adding that, all the registered people with disabilities in the municipality will receive support.

She said, the second batch of distribution will be done very soon, reiterated that, the Assembly have already procured working tools to assist PWDs in their business ventures to generate enough income to improve on their living conditions.

Items procured includes, deep freezers, sewing machines, hair drier machines, and other economic venture tools.

Persons with disabilities have a 3% share of all quarterly releases of the DACF meant for their upkeep. The Fund was previously disbursed in cash to the physically challenged persons for their use.

The government, however, took a decision that instead of handing out cash to the beneficiaries which they usually dissipated in no time, it was better to ensure that the money was used to secure sources of living with their consent.

The Savelugu MCE said government’s strategy was to use the disability fund to provide working tools and equipment to enable people with disabilities to either start or expand their businesses to make them self-dependent.

“This is what the President, His Excellency, Nana Addo Danquah Akufo-Addo is championing, it is not their fault that they [PWDs] found themselves in this particular situation…. so for me, I have been into this, helping people to be on their own… this is something I have just come to add what I have been doing in the past… and I think that that’s what I want to do….the joy of me is to see them get something doing and be out of the streets or not be dependent on their families”.

Hon Hajia Ayishetu hinted that, the Assembly have spent 85,000 Ghana cedis on procuring several economic venture tools for the people with disabilities in the Municipality, “And we are still spending, we have some of their monies still with us and we will make sure that at least each one of them will get something doing”.

The Savelugu MCE popularly known as Hajia Salawatia encouraged the disabled persons not to underrate their potentials and capabilities and urged them to make effective use of the resources provided to grow their businesses.

The secretary of People with Disabilities (PWDs) in the Savelugu Municipality, Mr. Mohammed Gadafi said, this is the first time members are receiving a huge amount of money and ruminants to improve their lot.

Mr. Gadafi on behalf of the PWDs commended the Savelugu MCE for showing the association with so much love and therefore thanked the Assembly for the support.
