Salaga rainstorm: over 1,000 people rendered homeless

About 1,218 residents of Salaga in the East Gonja District of the Northern Region have been left homeless after a rainstorm collapsed more than 187 houses and left several others with their roofs ripped off.

The about two-hour downpour Monday night which was characterized by thunder and lightning, also ripped off the roofs of six junior high schools in the district which has left over 400 pupils without a classroom

About 350 feeder roads linking surrounding communities to the district capital have been rendered un-motorable. This has cut off some areas from the Salaga township

The National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) Director of East Gonja Alhaji Umar Alhassan who confirmed the incident they were working seriously to get places for the Junior High Schools since their exams date is due

"NADMO have been to the affected areas, have seen the level of damage and have completed to the Northern Regional Directorate of NADMO and the District Security Committee," he said.

Meanwhile, some residents are worried no relief items have been provided them. They fear they may not receive any yet considering that those who suffered similar fate last year are yet to receive their relief items.
