STMA urged to support Community Development Vocational Institute

Mrs Georgian Lyall-Essien, Headmistress of the Community Development Vocational Institute, on Wednesday called on the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly (STMA) to adopt and support the Institute.

She made the call during the dedication of the new site for the Institute at the Anaji Old Brigade Camp near Takoradi.

Mrs Lyall-Essien said there was the need for the assembly to take over the institute because it is under the Ministry of Local Government.

She said the Institute would be able to meet its infrastructural needs under the STMA.

Mrs Lyall-Essien appealed to the STMA to assist to stop developers from encroaching on the institute’s land.

She said the government acquired the 4.6-hectare land at the new site but developers had encroached on about 2.6 hectares.

Mrs Lyall-Essien said the hardened criminals and wee smokers were turning classrooms at the new site into dens due to lack of access road to the Institute.

The Institute, which has about 150 students, offers courses in catering, dressmaking, hairdressing, ICT, batik tie and dye, English and mathematics, among others.

Reverend Father Francis Oppong of the Our Lady Star of Sea Cathedral of the Catholic Church dedicated the classrooms and students hostel to God.

He advised the students to stay away from bad friends and take their studies seriously in order to be useful to themselves, their families and the nation.
