The Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) has launched the 2025 edition of its Mobile Service Week (SMS Week) in Koforidua, in the Eastern Region, as part of activities marking the Trust’s 60th anniversary celebrations.

Held under the theme “A Legacy of Service,” the week-long nationwide outreach seeks to bring SSNIT’s services closer to members, employers, pensioners, and the general public — especially workers in the informal sector who often face challenges accessing SSNIT offices due to distance and time constraints.

The launch, held at Jackson Park in Koforidua, attracted a cross-section of dignitaries, including the Eastern Regional Minister, Rita Akosua Adjei Awatey; the Paramount Chief of the New Juaben Traditional Area, Daasebre Kwaku Boateng III; SSNIT Director-General, Kwesi Afreh Biney; SSNIT Board Chairman, Nana Ansah Sasraku III; heads of departments, employer associations, labour unions,
pensioners, and students.

Bringing SSNIT closer to the people

Addressing the gathering, the Director-General of SSNIT, Mr Kwesi Afreh Biney, described the Mobile Service Week as a flagship outreach programme that reinforces SSNIT’s mission to ensure income security for all Ghanaian workers.

He said the 2025 edition marks an expanded operation, with SSNIT staff providing services at 59 mobile locations across the country, in addition to its 53 permanent branches.

"Instead of travelling long distances to our offices, members can now perform every SSNIT-related transaction at convenient locations near them,” Mr Biney stated.

“The Mobile Service Week reflects our continuous commitment to making social security accessible to all workers in Ghana.”

Throughout the week, SSNIT officers will assist the public with registration and enrolment, pension benefits processing, contribution compliance, renewal of pensioner certificates, GhanaCard–SSNIT number mergers, and general enquiries.

Biney disclosed that as of October 2025, SSNIT had paid GHS 5.19 billion in pensions and related benefits to over 256,000 retirees nationwide, describing this as “living proof of the Trust’s legacy of reliability and service.”

Innovation and expansion

Highlighting new initiatives, the Director-General announced the upcoming launch of the SSNIT Virtual Branch — a 24-hour digital service centre that will allow members to access SSNIT services remotely from their homes or offices.

“This Virtual Branch is designed to make SSNIT services available anytime, anywhere,” he said, adding that SSNIT is also partnering with selected banks such as GCB, Fidelity, and Ecobank to host SSNIT Service Desks within their premises.

He further noted that Day Offices across the country are being upgraded into fully-fledged agencies to double the Trust’s national footprint.

As part of the 60th anniversary celebrations, SSNIT has also introduced a new initiative dubbed the “SSNIT Day of Reading” — a Social Security Literacy Day designed to educate schoolchildren on the importance of pensions and financial planning through interactive reading and mentorship sessions.

Traditional authority applauds initiative

Chairman of the event and Omanhene of the New Juaben Traditional Area, Daasebre Kwaku Boateng III, lauded SSNIT for its six decades of dedicated service to Ghanaian workers.

“By bringing services to the doorstep of clients — particularly the aged and pensioners who may have difficulty accessing service centres — SSNIT is demonstrating genuine empathy and social responsibility,” he remarked.

He pledged the support of the New Juaben Traditional Council to future SSNIT initiatives, describing the Mobile Service Week as “a true reflection of a people-centered institution.”

Eastern Regional Minister commends SSNIT

The Eastern Regional Minister, Rita Akosua Adjei Awatey, commended SSNIT for its consistency and innovation in expanding social security coverage to both formal and informal sector workers.

“By bringing services closer to workers, traders, and employers across communities, SSNIT has removed one of the biggest barriers to participation — accessibility,” she said.

“This outreach takes the concept of ‘service to the people’ beyond the office and turns it into visible action.”

She emphasised that social security remains critical to Ghana’s economic stability, providing workers with safety and dignity in retirement while promoting productivity.

The Minister also urged employers to remain faithful in paying SSNIT contributions, noting that it is both a legal obligation and a moral duty to secure employees’ future.

Regional rollout

In the Eastern Region, SSNIT mobile service centres will operate at various strategic locations, including lorry stations, Banks, Post offices, SSNIT offices, schools, and fuel filling stations.

The Koforidua Area Manager, Mr. Alex Appeagyei Wiafe, in his welcome remarks, reaffirmed the Trust’s commitment to maintaining transparency, responsiveness, and customer satisfaction in all its operations.

A legacy of trust

Since its establishment in 1965, SSNIT has been the cornerstone of Ghana’s social protection system, providing income security for workers and their dependents through pensions, invalidity benefits, and survivors’ support.

Through initiatives such as the Mobile Service Week, SSNIT continues to bridge the service gap, ensuring that every Ghanaian worker — whether formal or informal — can secure their future with dignity.

As Ghana celebrates six decades of social security, SSNIT’s legacy of service stands not only as a testament to institutional excellence but also as a national promise to protect every worker from “the cradle to the grave.”
