SIC donates educational materials to deprived schools

The State Insurance Corporation (SIC) Life Savings and Loans, has donated educational materials to some deprived basic schools in the Bawku West, Nabdam and Talensi districts of the Upper East Region.

The materials were made up of 1,500 dual desks and 5,200 exercise books.

The Bawku West District received 2000 exercise books, the Nabdam District had 1,500 exercise books whilst the Talensi District received 1700.

The 1,500 dual desks were presented to the Boya-Kpalsake Basic School in the Bawku West District since it lacked furniture, compelling the pupils to study on the floor.

Among some of the beneficiary schools were Datuuku, Sawalga, Gariko, and Bapeligu in the Talensi District and Pelingu, Gaari, Sakoti, Soliga and Kongo basic schools in the Nabdam District.

Mr Richard Appietu, the Managing Director of SIC Savings and Loans, said the donation was part of the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) of his outfit.

He said the corporation was touched by the plight of the school children and called on other institutions to extend their CSR to deprived areas of the Upper East Region.

“With the huge demands, government alone cannot do it all and we need to complement government’s efforts in addressing some of the challenges.

“Also, without the community, no institution can operate to make profit. It is, therefore, good to plough back to the community some of the profit we make to serve humanity,” he said.

The Headmaster of the Boya-Kpalsake Basic School, Mr Simon Amidini Atewene, said the pupils and the junior high school students had been sitting on the floor to learn.

He said the school, which is 40 years old, had never been rehabilitated and was not connected to the national grid making it difficult to teach the students Information and Communication Technology (ICT) lessons, particularly those in JHS.

Mr Cletus Avoka, the Member of Parliament for Zebilla Constituency, and the Mr Simon Agbango, the District Chief Executive of Bawku West, commended the SIC for the kind gesture.

Mr Edward Awunnore, the DCE for Talensi, said the donation would help complement the assembly’s effort to improve the educational needs of the schools and called on parents to ensure that their children went to school regularly.
